STAR WARS BOOK LIST
This is a simple list of all of the full-length Star Wars novels to date, in chronological order of when the stories take place, with the movies and TV shows also added for context. This list does not include most young readers' books, nor short eBooks that have been included in print editions of other novels. TV shows aimed at young children are also excluded. Books whose stories overlap within the same timeline are listed in recommended reading order based on my own judgement. Release dates are for the US - dates and availability may vary in other countries. Big thanks go to Once Upon A Galaxy for helping me keep up with new releases, and Wookieepedia for help figuring out some of the timeline dates. If you have any questions or feedback, you can email me at books@yodasdatapad.com. The Book List also has a Facebook page, but the best way to stay informed is to use the email signup form below.

Last updated: November 22, 2024
(Find previous versions with the Wayback Machine)

Newly released (since last update):
  • The High Republic: Temptation of the Force in the High Republic Era
  • The High Republic: Tears of the Nameless (young adult) in the High Republic Era
  • Mace Windu: The Glass Abyss in the Prequel Era
  • The Acolyte TV show in the High Republic Era
  • Tales of the Empire TV animated shorts (now listed in the Sequel Era)
Upcoming titles added:
  • Reign of the Empire: The Mask of Fear in the Prequel Era
  • Reign of the Empire Book 2 in the Prequel Era
  • Reign of the Empire Book 3 in the Prequel Era
  • The Acolyte: Wayseeker in the High Republic Era
  • The Acolyte: The Crystal Crown (young adult) in the High Republic Era
Other publishing-related changes:
  • The High Republic: Into the Light is planned for release in April 2025 (previously listed as "Spring 2025")
  • The release date for Season 2 of the Andor TV series has been moved back to April 2025 (previously listed as "2024")
  • Added release date for the upcoming Mandalorian tie-in film The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is planned for a 2026 release, apparently in May
  • The upcoming Skeleton Crew TV show is schedule to begin streaming in December 2024 (previously listed as just "2024")
  • Inquisitor: Rise of the Red Blade, From a Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi, The High Republic: Tales of Light and Life, Crimson Climb, The High Republic: The Eye of Darkness, Season 1 of the Ahsoka TV show, and Volume 2 of the Visions TV animated shorts are no longer categorized as new releases
Timeline adjustments:
  • Dates for the The High Republic novels Temptation of the Force and Tears of the Nameless set at -228 years, based on analysis by Wookieepedia editors (previously listed, mistakenly, at "~229")
  • Correction: The High Republic titles Tempest Breaker, Trials of the Jedi, and Tears of the Nameless set at about -227 years (previously listed, mistakenly, at "~229". They should be in the year after recent releases in the series, not the year before)
  • Mace Windu: The Glass Abyss placed at exactly -32 years (previously listed as "~32") - it takes place just a week after Episode I: The Phantom Menace
  • Date for the The Acolyte appears to be exactly -132 years per analysis by Wookieepedia editors (previously listed at "~132")
  • Moved the Skeleton Crew TV show from after the first season of the Ahsoka show to in between Seasons 2 and 3 of the The Mandalorian. It sounds like it takes place at some point during The Mandalorian series.
  • Moved the Tales of the Empire TV animated shorts to just before The Mandalorian TV show, now that we know more about it. The stories take place during a wide range of time periods - with the latest sometime between Aftermath: Empire's End and The Mandalorian Season 2 - and I favor placing things near their end date on the timeline to prevent them from spoiling anything else that takes place during their time frame. I had previously listed the series with an unknown date at the beginning of the Classic Era (which does fall within its time frame).
  • Season 1 of the Ahsoka TV show has been confirmed to take place at +9 years (previously listed at "~9")

LEGENDS

These books are part of the original Star Wars Expanded Universe, and follow an internally consistent timeline. Newer movies and other stories aren't based on these books, and will often contradict them.

NEW CANON

The new standardized Star Wars "canon" includes all the movie episodes, The Clone Wars TV show, and almost all new stories since 2014. New stories, including the films, are coordinated to prevent contradictions between them.

* In 2012, The Essential Reader's Companion attempted to resolve contradictions between The Clone Wars series** and pre-existing novels by moving The Cestus Deception and Jedi Trial to the beginning of the Clone Wars period (Anakin Skywalker is already a Jedi knight at the beginning of The Clone Wars movie/show, but is still a padawan in The Cestus Deception and at the beginning of Jedi Trial). However, If you're skipping The Clone Wars movie/TV series and tie-in books (marked with a double single star [**] on the timeline), you can read The Cestus Deception and Jedi Trial in their original places, which will feel more consistent with the rest of the Legends books. The above timeline now includes duplicate listings for these two books: once for their 2012 relocation, and once for their original placement.

** The early tie-in novels to The Clone Wars movie and TV show have not been adopted into the new canon, even though the movie and TV series have. These books, marked with a double star (**) on this timeline, officially exist only in Legends. However, because The Clone Wars series contains many contradictions with the rest of Legends, and because it's not referenced by the other Legends books between Episode II and III (which were written before it), readers who are only interested in the Legends timeline can consider skipping the books marked with the double stars (**).

*** The Clone Wars movie and the first six seasons of the TV show of the same name (not to be confused with the Star Wars: Clone Wars microseries, which doesn't have "the" in its title) were released before the New Canon was created, and therefore were officially considered part of the same timeline now called "Legends". However, they contain many contradictions with other Legends materials, and later became a foundation for the New Canon timeline. They're included on both sides of the list above because they provide the context for The Clone Wars tie-in books (marked with a double star [**]), which are officially only part of Legends. However, readers who are only interested in Legends might consider skipping this series, including the movie, the TV show, and the tie-in books. The TV show's seventh season, which was released long after the last Legends material, can safely be considered "New Canon only".

**** The three Dark Forces books, which tie into the video game series of the same name, are often incorrectly assumed to be comic books, since they were originally published by Dark Horse Comics. In fact they're short prose (text) novels, with occasional paintings included as illustrations. Because they're shorter than most Star Wars novels and weren't part of the main publishing program, they're sometimes excluded from lists of Star Wars books. However, they're a well-established part of Legends lore, were printed as separate books, and were even adapted into audio dramas, so they probably have at least as much of a right to be on the list as the New Canon's original audiobooks do. Unfortunately they're out of print, and the second and third books can be expensive to acquire online - if you can't find them at a local library, you might consider skipping them (they're somewhat connected to the Darth Bane novels, and their main character later appears in The New Jedi Order, but in general the other novels don't reference them much).
